An Illinois man is facing criminal charges after he crashed his vehicle and allegedly hid illegal substances while waiting for police to arrive. He is currently accused of committing drug crimes among other charges, including armed violence and possessing a stolen firearm. Police say that eyewitness reports helped them uncover the hidden items that led to these charges.
In early June 2017, a 19-year-old man crashed his car at an intersection. Although the exact nature of the collision is not clear, it appears to have been a single-vehicle wreck in which the driver was not hurt. However, the collision left his vehicle disabled and stuck on a median.
Witnesses allegedly saw the driver exit his vehicle with a box, which they claim he hid in a ditch near the scene of the accident. Afterward he waited for police in his vehicle. Those witnesses told police what they witnessed, and authorities brought in a K-9 dog, who quickly located a black briefcase in the ditch. Police claim they found a coffee mug, plastic bags, a measuring cup, over 5 grams of methamphetamine, 13 grams of marijuana, a stolen handgun and various other drug paraphernalia.
The driver apparently has a criminal history, as one of his charges includes possession of a weapon by a felon. The consequences of this allegation combined with his other charges for drug crimes could potentially send him to jail for a lengthy period of time, which is an outcome most Illinois defendants would like to avoid or lessen. Although plea deals are not appropriate for everyone, some defendants can realize the best possible outcome by negotiating such a deal with the prosecution in exchange for lesser charges or fewer criminal consequences.
